The 12 Best Orthodontists in Berlin

Orthodontics in Germany is a specialist field: a Fachzahnarzt für Kieferorthopädie completes three years of extra training after dental school, while some dentists straighten teeth after a master's degree instead. Statutory health insurance usually pays for braces for under-18s once the misalignment reaches a set severity grade, but adults generally pay themselves.

This guide lists Berlin practices whose own websites describe their orthodontic work in detail. For each one we note the qualifications of the treating dentists, the appliances offered, whether they focus on children, adults or both, and the languages available.

How to choose Orthodontists in Berlin

  1. Check who treats youThe Fachzahnarzt für Kieferorthopädie title requires three years of specialist training. A master's degree in orthodontics is a different, shorter route, so ask who plans and supervises your case.
  2. Get the timing right for childrenSeveral practices advise a first check-up from about age four or during the change of teeth, because some problems are easiest to correct while the jaw is still growing.
  3. Compare aligners and lingual bracesAdults who want discreet treatment can choose removable aligners or brackets fixed behind the teeth. Ask which suits your bite and how often the practice uses that system.
  4. Ask for a written cost planEven when insurance pays for a child's braces, extras such as ceramic brackets or special wires are billed privately. Adults should ask for a total that includes retainers.

Frequently asked questions

Does health insurance pay for braces in Germany?

Statutory insurance covers orthodontic treatment for under-18s when the misalignment reaches at least grade 3 of the five-grade KIG scale. Parents pay a 20 percent share, or 10 percent for a second child, which is refunded once treatment is completed as planned. Adults are covered only for severe jaw anomalies that need combined surgical treatment, and extras such as invisible brackets are billed privately.

How much do aligners like Invisalign cost?

It varies. The price depends on how complex the correction is, how many aligner sets are needed, the length of treatment and the retainers afterwards. Treatment is billed privately under the GOZ fee scale, so ask for a written cost plan, and check whether the practice offers payment in instalments.

When should a child first see an orthodontist?

Many Berlin practices suggest a first check-up from around age four or when the side milk teeth start to fall out. Most fixed-brace treatment begins later, during the second phase of the change of teeth, but early checks can catch problems that are easier to fix while the jaw is growing.
